| Dr. James Shalom Dr. James Shalom, Dr. Caroline's choice to succeed her, became Director of HUG in October, 2001. Dr. Shalom was born in Ottawa, Canada and moved to Israel in 1969 where he graduated from Hebrew University with a degree in chemistry and biochemistry. After serving in the Israel Defense Forces as a paramedic in the paratroopers, he attended medical school at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Shalom returned to Israel in 1986. In the mid-90s, he was appointed Medical Director of the Upper Galilee, responsible for the health care of 60 communities. He met Dr. Caroline in 1994, the year that HUG was founded. At the end of 1996, he became Director of a Specialty Clinic in Carmiel and also worked there as a physician and ran their walk-in center. He completed a Masters of Medical Systems from Be'er Sheva University and more recently, in 2003, completed a two year course in Palliative Care Medicine run by Dr. Alex Waller, who co-authored Handbook of Palliative Care with Dr. Caroline. Under Dr. Shalom's excellent guidance, HUG has developed a superb, first-class and dedicated staff, which has risen to the challenges that life and death create in this low income area of Israel. HUG has also received several international awards in the last four years honoring it as an exemplary hospice organization as compared to others of its size worldwide. HUG continues to expand its services and has tripled its patient load in the past five years. |
